What is an FUE hair transplant?
FUE (follicular unit extraction) is a minimally invasive technique in which individual hair follicles are taken one by one from the donor area - the back and sides of the head - and implanted into the thinning or receding areas.
Individual follicles are taken one at a time from the donor area at the back and sides of the head
Each follicle is then implanted into the thinning or receding areas
No linear scar, and healing is barely visible - even with short hair
Your surgeon designs the hairline to match your facial proportions, so the result looks completely natural
Could FUE be right for me?
Most people experiencing hair loss are suitable for FUE. During your consultation, a surgeon will assess your scalp, donor area and medical history before recommending a personalised plan. You're likely a good candidate if:

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a hair transplant cost in Manchester?
Hair transplants at Geneve Clinic start from £3,500. Your individual cost depends on the areas to be treated, the graft count your donor area can safely provide and the complexity of the procedure. Following your free consultation, you will receive a fixed, all-inclusive quotation before deciding whether to proceed. This sets out your treatment and the included assessment, hairline design, procedure costs, medication / aftercare kit, follow-ups and 12 months of aftercare. Comparing written treatment plans, rather than headline prices alone, helps you understand what is included.
How many grafts will I need?
A graft is a naturally occurring group of follicles, usually containing one to four hairs; a graft count is not the same as a hair count. The number needed depends on the size of the thinning area, your existing density, hair thickness, desired hairline and the quality and quantity of donor hair. A smaller hairline correction may need fewer grafts than extensive crown or frontal coverage. Your assessment includes a graft estimate and an explanation of how those grafts would be distributed. Safe donor preservation and a realistic long-term plan matter more than choosing the largest number.
Am I suitable for FUE?
FUE may be appropriate if you have a suitable pattern of hair loss, enough healthy donor hair at the back and sides of the scalp and realistic expectations about coverage. Your surgeon also considers your age, whether your hair loss is stable, scalp health, medical history and any medication. Active scalp disease, certain types of alopecia, limited donor density or uncontrolled health conditions may mean surgery should be delayed or is not advisable. Photos can help with an initial review, but they do not replace a clinical assessment. Suitability is confirmed individually, not guaranteed by an online enquiry.
Does a hair transplant hurt?
FUE is performed under local anaesthetic. The injections can briefly sting, but the treated scalp should then be numb; you may still notice pressure or movement. Tell your team if you feel pain so they can reassess comfort and anaesthesia. Afterwards, mild tenderness, tightness or swelling can occur and should be managed according to your personalised instructions and any prescribed medication. Pain tolerance and recovery vary. Severe or increasing pain, spreading redness, fever or other concerning symptoms should be reported promptly to the clinic.
How long does the procedure take?
FUE is usually planned as a day procedure, and many treatments take around 6-8 hours, although a smaller or more complex case may take less or more time. The schedule includes checking your plan and hairline, preparing the donor area, local anaesthetic, extracting grafts and carefully placing them in the recipient area, with breaks as appropriate. Your team will explain the expected duration for your own graft count and treatment areas before the day. Allow time for preparation and your aftercare discussion rather than planning around a precise finish time.
When can I return to work?
This depends on your job, the extent of treatment and how comfortable you feel with visible redness or scabbing. Some people can resume light desk work within a few days, particularly from home, while others prefer around 7-14 days away from public-facing work. Physically demanding jobs, sweating, dust exposure or headwear that contacts the grafts may require longer or adjusted duties. Scabs commonly remain visible during the early healing period. Your surgeon will give individual advice about work, exercise and protecting the grafts, so discuss your schedule before arranging leave.
When will I see my final result?
Growth happens gradually. Transplanted hair shafts often shed during the first few weeks, and the follicles then enter a resting phase. New hair commonly begins to appear at around 3-4 months, with more noticeable improvement over 6-9 months. Final maturation is often assessed at around 12-18 months; crown growth can be slower. Early hairs may be fine before they thicken. These are general timelines, not guarantees: healing, hair characteristics and your individual response affect the result. Your follow-ups help the team review progress.
Will my hair transplant look natural?
The aim is a natural-looking result that suits your facial proportions, age and existing hair. Planning includes hairline shape, the direction and angle of growth and where different graft types are placed. A conservative, personalised design and careful distribution help the transplanted hair blend with existing hair. Achievable density is limited by your donor supply and the area being covered, so a transplant does not necessarily recreate the density you had before hair loss. Your surgeon will explain the likely outcome and limitations; no clinic can guarantee an invisible procedure or a particular result.
Will the transplanted hair fall out?
It is common for the transplanted hair shafts to shed in the weeks after treatment. This usually does not mean the implanted follicles have been lost; they can remain in the scalp and produce new growth after the resting phase. Temporary shedding can also affect nearby existing hair. Donor follicles are generally more resistant to pattern hair loss, but long-term retention varies and your non-transplanted hair may continue thinning. Your surgeon can discuss whether ongoing hair-loss treatment is appropriate. Follow washing instructions and contact the clinic if you have concerns rather than picking at scabs.
What happens if I'm not suitable?
If surgery is not right for you, the assessment should explain why and what other options may be appropriate. These can include monitoring your hair loss, addressing a scalp or medical condition, discussing evidence-based medication with a qualified clinician or considering non-surgical approaches. Sometimes treatment can be reconsidered once hair loss is stabilised or an underlying issue has been addressed; in other cases it may not be advisable. You are not obliged to proceed, and requesting a consultation does not commit you to a procedure.
Who performs my procedure?
Your procedure is led by Dr Meena Zareie, the GMC-registered Medical Director whose profile is shown on this page, with support from the clinical team. During your consultation, ask which doctor will be responsible for your treatment and which stages are performed by the doctor and supporting team. Your treatment plan and consent discussion should make those roles clear before you decide to proceed. You should also have the opportunity to discuss your medical history, risks and expectations with the clinician responsible for your care.
What aftercare is included?
Your all-inclusive treatment quote includes post-treatment medication / an aftercare kit, follow-up appointments, 12 months of aftercare and direct access to the clinic following treatment. Your team will explain scalp care, washing, sleeping, activity restrictions and how to protect the grafts during early healing. Follow-ups provide an opportunity to review healing and growth and discuss concerns. The exact medication, kit contents and appointment schedule will be confirmed in your individual plan. Ask how to contact the clinic, including for urgent concerns, before leaving after your procedure.
Can I see previous patient results?
Yes, you can explore the before-and-after photos on this page and ask the clinic for further examples relevant to your hair-loss pattern, hair type and treatment goals. When comparing results, consider lighting, camera angle, hair length and the time elapsed since treatment, as these can affect appearance. A previous patient's outcome is not a guarantee of your own result. Your surgeon can explain which examples are a useful comparison and what is realistic given your donor hair and planned coverage. Any illustrative sample review on this page is labelled and is not verified patient feedback.
What happens during my free consultation?
You will talk to the team about your hair loss, concerns and what you would like to achieve. Your hair and donor area, suitability for FUE and relevant medical history will be reviewed, followed by a recommended approach, graft estimate and transparent quotation. You can ask about the surgeon, risks, healing, growth timeline and aftercare before making any decision. Consultations can be requested online or in person and are free with no obligation. Optional front, back, left-side, right-side and top photos can help the initial review; an in-person examination may still be needed to confirm suitability and the final plan.
